Field guide 03 / 11Leshan
A giant Buddha, a small city, a river.

Why go
A giant Buddha, a small city.
Leshan is built around a single, enormous image: the 71-metre Buddha carved into the cliff where three rivers meet. But the city is also a excellent place to eat, with a compact old town and a slower riverfront that rewards an overnight stay.
400–400 m
At about 400 m, Leshan is low and easy. The stairs to the Buddha’s feet are steep but short; the boat is the low-effort option.
TFU · CTU
High-speed trains from Chengdu take about 1 hour. The Buddha scenic area is a 20–30 minute taxi or bus ride from Leshan station.
Mar–Jun · Sep–Nov
Spring and autumn are best. Summer is hot and humid; winter is quiet and often misty, which suits the river. No special permit. Book the Buddha ticket in advance in peak season and carry your passport.
Four ways in
What we would do first.
Not a top-ten list. Four ways to feel the place, selected for the hour and the mood.
The Buddha from the water
A short boat trip gives you the full scale of the carving in one view. It is the best option if the stair queue is long or you are travelling with someone who cannot manage steep steps.
Down to the feet
The cliff stairway is narrow and often slow, but standing at the Buddha’s feet is worth the wait. Go at opening time or late afternoon.
Mahao Tomb
A Han-dynasty cliff tomb complex a short drive from the Buddha, with excellent guides and far fewer visitors. A good half-day pairing.
The old town at dusk
Walk the riverfront and the old streets after the day trippers leave. The city becomes a normal, pleasant place to eat and wander.
Where to base yourself
Find your corner.
Stay in the village, valley or neighborhood that matches your pace — not just the one closest to the gate.
Zhanggongqiao
Food · old streets · centralThe best base for eating: a dense grid of snack shops, sweet-skinned duck vendors and small restaurants near the river.
Buddha scenic area
Quiet · green · close to the gateStay within walking distance of the entrance if you want to be first in line. It is less lively at night.
Emei gateway
Practical · transport · hot springsUseful if you are combining Leshan with Emei. The train station and bus links are straightforward.
“Everyone comes for the Buddha. The reason to stay is the duck, the river and the ordinary streets behind it.”
Eat & drink
Order like you live here.
What to look for, where to sit, and the dishes worth planning a day around.

Sweet-skinned duck
$Crisp, lacquered duck with a sweet-savory glaze. Buy a half from a busy shop and eat it with rice or cold noodles.
Bobo chicken
$Chilled skewers dipped in chili oil and sesame. Choose a mix of vegetables, tofu and meat, then let the shop count the sticks.
Tofu nao
$Silken tofu with chili oil, pickles and scallion. Ask for less chili if you are still adjusting.
River fish
$Often cooked with pickled chilies and ginger. Confirm the price per jin and the weight before it goes in the wok.
Menus change with the season. Ask what is good today, and let the kitchen decide one dish for you.
A three-day sketch

Before you book
The useful bits.
Practical notes we find ourselves repeating, from payments to the best time of day.
Do both if you can: the boat shows the scale, the stairs show the detail. If you only have one, choose the boat in peak season and the stairs at opening time.
