Field guide 05 / 11Jiuzhaigou
A valley that behaves like a painting.

Why go
A valley that behaves like a painting.
Jiuzhaigou is a Y-shaped valley of terraced lakes, waterfalls and forest, protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site and a Biosphere Reserve. It is genuinely extraordinary, and also one of Sichuan’s most managed landscapes: timed entry, shuttle buses and boardwalks. Go early, choose your valleys, and let the crowd flow past.
2,000–3,100 m
The park entrance is about 2,000 m; Long Lake is 3,100 m. The altitude is moderate but real. Take the first day slowly and drink water.
JZH · TFU
Fly to Jiuzhaigou Huanglong Airport (JZH), then 1.5–2 hours by road; or take a long-distance bus from Chengdu (8–10 hours). Many travelers combine Jiuzhaigou with Huanglong.
May–Jun · Sep–Oct
Autumn (mid-October to early November) is the famous colour season and very busy. Summer is green and cool; winter is quiet but some areas may close. No special permit, but entry is by real-name timed ticket. Book through the official channel and carry your passport. Rules change by season; confirm before you travel.
Four ways in
What we would do first.
Not a top-ten list. Four ways to feel the place, selected for the hour and the mood.
Five Flower Lake
The most famous lake in the park, and still worth the stop. The colours come from minerals and submerged wood; the best light is mid-morning, before the tour groups arrive.
Long Lake
The highest and largest lake in the park, a deep blue sheet at 3,100 m. Walk the boardwalk to the far end and let the crowd move on.
Shuzheng Lakes
A chain of small, clear lakes and reed beds near the entrance. Many visitors rush past on the shuttle; get off and walk this section.
Nuorilang Waterfall
The widest waterfall in the park, best seen from the boardwalk below. It is a short stop, but a memorable one after rain.
Where to base yourself
Find your corner.
Stay in the village, valley or neighborhood that matches your pace — not just the one closest to the gate.
Zhangzha town
Practical · hotels · foodThe main base outside the park gate, with hotels, restaurants and tour buses. It is not beautiful, but it is convenient.
Park gate
Early · efficient · busyStay within walking distance if you want to be at the gate before opening. The first shuttle of the day makes a real difference.
Rize Valley
Lakes · boardwalks · colourThe most concentrated scenery in the park, and the busiest. Start here, then work back toward the entrance.
“The water is not a backdrop. It is the reason the valley exists, and it rewards the people who get off the bus.”
Eat & drink
Order like you live here.
What to look for, where to sit, and the dishes worth planning a day around.

Yak hotpot
$A warming bowl of yak meat, vegetables and broth. Ask for mild; the chili can be fierce after a cold day.
Highland barley cakes
$Nutty, dense and good with butter tea. A useful snack before a long park day.
Wild mushroom dishes
$Seasonal mushrooms are a local specialty. Ask what is fresh and avoid anything you cannot identify.
Park snacks
$Food inside the park is limited and expensive. Bring water, fruit and nuts; there are refill stations and simple canteens.
Menus change with the season. Ask what is good today, and let the kitchen decide one dish for you.
