Clouds, monkeys, and a golden summit.

Why go
Clouds, monkeys, and a golden summit.
Emei is one of China’s four sacred Buddhist mountains: a 3,099-metre summit, a chain of temples, and a subtropical forest that turns into cloud around you. The summit is the headline, but the mountain is best experienced over two days, with time for tea and weather.
500–3,099 m
The base is at about 500 m; the Golden Summit is 3,099 m. Most people feel fine, but the altitude is real: walk slowly, drink water, and do not rush the cable-car-to-summit transition.
TFU · CTU
High-speed trains from Chengdu to Emeishan take about 1.5 hours; from Leshan, 20 minutes. Bus or taxi to Baoguo village, then shuttle and cable car for the summit.
Apr–Jun · Sep–Nov
Spring and autumn are clearest. Summer is green but crowded and wet; winter brings snow, ice and a quieter, more dramatic summit. No special permit. Buy the entrance ticket and shuttle/cable-car tickets separately; keep your passport for the ticket check.
Four ways in
What we would do first.
Not a top-ten list. Four ways to feel the place, selected for the hour and the mood.
Golden Summit at sunrise
Stay overnight near the summit or take the first cable car. When the cloud sea is in, the statue appears to float; when it is not, the view disappears completely. Both are part of the mountain.
Baoguo village
The practical base at the foot of the mountain: temples, tea houses and a good vegetarian restaurant. Start here, not at the summit.
Wannian Temple and the monkey zone
A beautiful temple with a Song-dynasty bronze elephant statue, reached by cable car or a long stone stairway. The monkeys are bold; keep food and plastic bags out of sight.
A night on the mountain
Staying at a temple guesthouse or a small hotel near the summit lets you see the mountain without the day-trip rush. It is basic, quiet and worth it.
Where to base yourself
Find your corner.
Stay in the village, valley or neighborhood that matches your pace — not just the one closest to the gate.
Baoguo village
Temples · tea · accessThe best base for a first visit. Restaurants, guesthouses and the ticket office are within walking distance of the trailhead.
Leidongping
High · practical · close to cable carA transfer point near the summit cable car, useful if you want to shorten the climb and catch sunrise.
Golden Summit
Cold · cloud · once-in-a-lifetimeA handful of hotels and temple rooms at the top. Book ahead, bring layers, and expect basic comforts for a big view.
“The mountain does not perform on demand. You wait, you drink tea, and eventually the cloud opens.”
Eat & drink
Order like you live here.
What to look for, where to sit, and the dishes worth planning a day around.

Tofu nao
$Silken tofu with chili, pickles and scallion. A gentle start before a long climb.
Temple vegetarian
$Seasonal vegetables, tofu and rice. The temple restaurants are simple, cheap and part of the visit.
Snow konjac
$A chewy, mild mountain vegetable often served with chili. Try it once; it is unusual and filling.
Emei tea
$Local green tea from the mountain slopes. Order a pot at a teahouse and rest your legs.
Menus change with the season. Ask what is good today, and let the kitchen decide one dish for you.
A three-day sketch

Before you book
The useful bits.
Practical notes we find ourselves repeating, from payments to the best time of day.
Possibly. It is most common in spring and autumn, usually early morning. Stay overnight at the summit for the best chance, and treat the weather as part of the experience.
