Why go

The gateway to Kham.

Kangding is where the Sichuan basin gives way to the Tibetan plateau: a fast, cold river, a busy market, and a ring of mountains. Most travelers pass through on the way to Tagong or Yading, but it deserves a night or two, both for its culture and for acclimatization.

Altitude

2,560–4,298 m

Kangding is 2,560 m; the Zheduo Pass nearby is 4,298 m. Use Kangding as an acclimatization night before Tagong (3,700 m) or Yading.

Getting there

TFU · CTU

About 3.5–4 hours by expressway from Chengdu, or a scenic drive from Danba/Tagong. Buses run from Chengdu Xinnanmen; a private driver is easier for the mountain stops.

Season & permits

Apr–Oct

Spring and autumn are clear; summer is green with rain; winter is cold and dry. The pass can close in heavy snow. No special permit for Kangding. Carry your passport for hotels and any checkpoint on the road west; rules can change, so check before heading to remote areas.

Four ways in

What we would do first.

Not a top-ten list. Four ways to feel the place, selected for the hour and the mood.

01
Kangding

Paoma Shan

The hill above town, with a temple, prayer flags and a view over the river valley. Walk up in the late afternoon for the light.

02
Kangding

Nanwu Temple

A large Tibetan Buddhist temple on the edge of town, with a dramatic golden roof and a steady stream of pilgrims. Quiet in the early morning.

03
Mugecuo

Mugecuo Lake

A high alpine lake about 1.5 hours from town, with forest, grassland and a sacred cave. A good day trip if the weather is clear.

04
Zheduo

Zheduo Pass

A 4,298 m pass on the road to Tagong, with prayer flags and a vast view. Stop briefly, walk slowly and do not overdo the photos.

Where to base yourself

Find your corner.

Stay in the village, valley or neighborhood that matches your pace — not just the one closest to the gate.

01

Old town

River · market · food

The lively center, with the river running through it, Tibetan shops and small restaurants. Good for an evening walk.

02

Paoma Shan

Temple · view · quiet

The hillside above town, with guesthouses and a slower pace. Walkable to the center if you do not mind stairs.

03

New town

Practical · hotels · transport

Modern hotels, bus stations and wider roads. Less atmospheric, but useful for an early departure.

“Kangding is a hinge. Behind you is the basin; ahead is the plateau, and the weather changes at the pass.”

Look for dishes that combine Sichuan pepper with yak and barley. The best places are simple and busy.

Menus change with the season. Ask what is good today, and let the kitchen decide one dish for you.

The useful bits.

Practical notes we find ourselves repeating, from payments to the best time of day.

Yes, if you are heading to Tagong or Yading. A night at 2,560 m helps your body adjust before 3,700 m and gives you a taste of Kham culture.
