Why go

Three sacred peaks, one thin-aired pilgrimage.

Yading is a high sacred landscape of three snow peaks, glacial lakes and yak pasture, protected as a nature reserve and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It is one of the most beautiful places in Sichuan, and one of the most demanding: the gate is at 2,900 m, the main valley at 4,000 m, and the lakes above 4,500 m. Go slowly, go prepared, and treat it as a pilgrimage rather than a checklist.

Altitude

2,900–4,600 m

The gate is 2,900 m, Chonggu Monastery 3,880 m, Luorong pasture 4,180 m, Milk Lake 4,600 m. This is serious altitude. Spend a night in Daocheng or Kangding, do not fly in and hike the same day, and know the signs of altitude sickness.

Getting there

DCY

Fly to Daocheng Yading Airport (DCY, 4,411 m) and drive 1.5–2 hours, or take a long road trip from Chengdu via Kangding (2 days). The airport altitude is high; many travelers prefer to acclimatize in Kangding first.

Season & permits

Apr–May · Sep–Oct

April–May brings rhododendrons and clear skies; September–October is the classic autumn window. Winter is cold and quiet but some facilities close; summer is green with rain and clouds. Yading lies in Garzê, Kham — not the Tibet Autonomous Region — so a TAR tour permit is not required for ordinary visits. The scenic area still requires a real-name ticket and shuttle. Carry your passport; remote checkpoints and monasteries may have additional rules, so check locally.

Four ways in

What we would do first.

Not a top-ten list. Four ways to feel the place, selected for the hour and the mood.

01
Chonggu

Chonggu Monastery

The gateway to the sacred valley, a small monastery at 3,880 m with a view of the three peaks. Walk slowly and acclimatize here before going higher.

02
Chonggu

Pearl Lake

A short climb from Chonggu to a small turquoise lake with a direct view of Xiannairi. It is the most accessible of the sacred lakes and a good first goal.

03
Upper valley

Milk Lake and Five Colour Lake

The high pilgrimage: a steep climb to 4,600 m, rewarded by two glacial lakes under the peaks. Only attempt if you are fit, acclimatized and the weather is stable.

04
Luorong

Luorong pasture

A wide meadow at 4,180 m where the valley opens up. Many travelers turn back here; it is a beautiful destination in its own right.

Where to base yourself

Find your corner.

Stay in the village, valley or neighborhood that matches your pace — not just the one closest to the gate.

01

Yading village

Close · basic · high

The closest base to the gate, with simple guesthouses. Good for an early start, but cold and limited.

02

Daocheng

Practical · lower · services

A town at 3,750 m with hotels, restaurants and banks. Use it to acclimatize and organize transport.

03

Riwa

Gateway · hotels · tickets

The town at the park entrance, with the ticket office and shuttle. Practical rather than atmospheric.

“Yading is not a trophy. The mountain was sacred long before it was on a ticket, and it asks for patience.”

Before you book

The useful bits.

Practical notes we find ourselves repeating, from payments to the best time of day.

Yes. The gate is 2,900 m and the lakes are above 4,500 m. Arrive slowly, spend a night at 3,700 m, drink water, avoid alcohol, and know the symptoms. Descend if you feel worse.
