Field guide 08 / 11Danba
Watchtowers, orchards, and stone villages.

Why go
Watchtowers, orchards, and stone villages.
Danba is a valley of Tibetan stone houses, ancient watchtowers and apple orchards, folded into the mountains between Siguniang and Kangding. It is one of the most rewarding places in Sichuan to slow down, stay in a family guesthouse and walk between villages.
2,100–3,000 m
The valley floor is about 1,800–2,100 m; villages climb to 2,400–3,000 m. Danba is a good place to acclimatize before Tagong and Yading.
TFU · CTU
About 4–5 hours by road from Chengdu via Siguniang, or 3–4 hours from Kangding. Roads are scenic and winding; a private driver is the easiest option.
Apr–May · Sep–Oct
Spring is blossom season; autumn is clear and golden. Summer is green with rain; winter is quiet but cold. No special permit for ordinary visits. Some villages charge a small entry fee; homestays should register your passport. Rules for camera use in monasteries vary.
Four ways in
What we would do first.
Not a top-ten list. Four ways to feel the place, selected for the hour and the mood.
Jiaju Tibetan village
The postcard village: white stone houses with painted eaves, terraced fields and watchtowers on the ridge. Stay overnight if you can; the day-trippers leave at dusk.
Zhonglu village
A quieter alternative to Jiaju, with a beautiful walk between farmhouses and old towers. The light is best in late afternoon.
Suopo watchtowers
A hillside of ancient stone watchtowers, some more than a thousand years old. The site is atmospheric and lightly visited; go with a local guide for context.
Mo’erduo Mountain
A sacred mountain and grassland area with big views over the valley. The drive is high and rough; check conditions before setting out.
Where to base yourself
Find your corner.
Stay in the village, valley or neighborhood that matches your pace — not just the one closest to the gate.
Jiaju
Stone · fields · guesthousesThe most famous village and the best place for a first night. Homestays are simple and family-run.
Zhonglu
Quiet · farming · walksLess polished than Jiaju but more lived-in. Good for walking and photography without crowds.
Danba town
Practical · transport · foodThe county town has banks, buses and the best choice of restaurants. Use it for logistics, not atmosphere.
“The towers are not ruins. They are a reminder that this valley has been connected to the wider world for a very long time.”
Eat & drink
Order like you live here.
What to look for, where to sit, and the dishes worth planning a day around.

Tibetan family dinner
$Usually includes yak or pork, potatoes, barley and seasonal vegetables. Eat what is offered and ask before photographing the table.
Buckwheat noodles
$Rustic, nutty noodles served hot with a simple broth or chili. A good mountain lunch.
Cured pork with peppers
$A rich, smoky dish that pairs well with rice. Ask for less chili if you need it.
Danba apples
$Crisp, sweet and famous in Sichuan. Buy from a roadside stall in autumn.
Menus change with the season. Ask what is good today, and let the kitchen decide one dish for you.

The useful bits.
Practical notes we find ourselves repeating, from payments to the best time of day.
Yes, but a private driver is much easier than public buses. Village guesthouses can help arrange local guides and transport.
