Why go

Travertine terraces at the edge of the sky.

Huanglong is a high valley of calcium-carbonate terraces, shallow turquoise pools and pine forest, set between 3,200 and 3,600 metres. The scenery is otherworldly, but the altitude is not a detail: plan a short visit, use the cable car, and give yourself time to breathe.

Altitude

3,200–3,600 m

The park entrance is 3,200 m and the highest pool about 3,600 m. This is high enough to cause headaches and breathlessness. Do not rush, and avoid Huanglong on your first day at altitude.

Getting there

JZH

About 1.5 hours by road from Jiuzhaigou or 30–40 minutes from JZH airport. Most visitors come as a day trip; staying in Chuanzhusi overnight makes an earlier start possible.

Season & permits

May–Oct

Huanglong is open year-round, but the upper boardwalks and cable car can close after snow. May–October is the reliable window; spring is quiet, summer green and autumn golden. No special permit. Buy the park ticket and cable-car ticket separately; the park may close sections in winter or bad weather.

Four ways in

What we would do first.

Not a top-ten list. Four ways to feel the place, selected for the hour and the mood.

01
Upper valley

Five Colour Pond

The highest and most photographed pool, a shallow mosaic of mineral colours at the top of the valley. Reach it by cable car and a short boardwalk, then walk down.

02
Middle valley

Golden Sand Beach

A long travertine slope that looks like a frozen river of gold. The light is best in the morning, before the day-trippers arrive.

03
Main valley

The boardwalk down

The walk from the top to the entrance is about 4 km of gentle descent, with pools and forest the whole way. Take it slowly and use the benches.

04
Chuanzhusi

Chuanzhusi

A small town near the park with simple hotels and restaurants. It is not a destination in itself, but it is a useful base for an early start.

Where to base yourself

Find your corner.

Stay in the village, valley or neighborhood that matches your pace — not just the one closest to the gate.

01

Chuanzhusi

Practical · high · close

The most convenient base, 30–40 minutes from the park. Basic hotels, yak restaurants and a cold night.

02

Huanglong village

Very small · close to gate

A handful of guesthouses near the entrance. Useful if you want to be first in, but facilities are limited.

03

Songpan

Old town · horses · gateway

A larger town with a historic wall and access to horse trekking. About 1.5 hours away, better as a separate stop.

“Huanglong is not a place to conquer. It is a place to walk slowly and let the altitude set the pace.”

Food inside the park is limited. Bring water, nuts and fruit; there are basic snack stalls near the entrance.

Local note

Menus change with the season. Ask what is good today, and let the kitchen decide one dish for you.

A three-day sketch

Days that leave room.

Use this as a sketch. We can stretch it, slow it down or add a day trip once we know your dates.

01

Arrive high

Rest, do not rush
  1. Transfer from Jiuzhaigou or JZH
  2. Check in at Chuanzhusi
  3. Short walk and an early dinner
  4. Sleep; altitude often feels worse at night
02

The terraces

Cable car up, walk down
  1. Early entry to Huanglong
  2. Cable car to the upper valley
  3. Five Colour Pond and Golden Sand Beach
  4. Descend the boardwalk and drive onward

Make it yours

Before you book

The useful bits.

Practical notes we find ourselves repeating, from payments to the best time of day.

The park is manageable, but the altitude is high. Children should be old enough to tell you how they feel, and the visit should be short and slow. Consult a doctor if anyone has heart or lung conditions.
